HP Envy 17"
Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit)

Whenever I start my HP Envy I am given a black screen which after trying about everything you possibly can without seeing a thing I have had no luck fixing this. Basically I press the power button to boot it up, it begins it's bootup(judging by sounds) but shuts back down after a couple of seconds, after about 5 more seconds pass it begins to start back up again sounding like it used to sound when starting it up, However I am left with a black screen which I am unable to fix. Please help

Greetings @soates,

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that your computer is not booting to the login screen or desktop, is that right?

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps on your own?

Please disconnect any devices connected to your computer.

If you have any USB or DVD in the computer, please disconnect it.

Perform a power reset on the computer. Click here for assistance.

Disconnect the adapter, remove the battery (if it can be removed)

Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to drain the static in the computer.

Connect the adapter and battery to the computer.

Turn the computer ON while holding the Win + B key. (hold these 2 keys for more than 10 seconds, let go of the power button alone)

Refer to this HP Article to know more about BIOS recovery.

If rolling back BIOS does not work, try again.

If the issue persists, try an external monitor or contact our phone support team to check on the service options available for your computer.

Keep me posted.

Hi

If you can make one of these, it may help, DVD or USB....

ISO images of various Microsoft OS's are available. They can be be downloaded (sometimes you need a licence key other than the HP OEM key) and 'burnt' to a DVD or USB. They will NOT contain the appropriate HP software, like drivers etc, but will enable a repair to be started

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

For when you only have Linux etc (non MS OS) to create install media.

THEN ......

ADJUST SECURE/LEGACY BOOT & BOOT ORDER AS NEEDED.

After downloading and loading the BIOS file onto the USB and connecting it upon startup has fixed the problem, I have succesfully logged back in with a normal screen. Thanks very much @Chimney_83 🙂
