My granddaughter attempted to turn laptop on for first time without power cord connected and now it

My granddaughter attempted to turn on the laptop for the first time without power cord connected. It didn't work. Just a flash of screen and then black again. Now even with the power cord connected, it still won't power on. Please help

The immediate shutdown without the power cord connect indicated the battery probably is dead -- which can happen if you leave laptops shut down for long periods of time.  And in some model laptops, once the battery is dead, it will no longer turn on.  Unfortunately, HP does not provide us with a list of those laptops.
