Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
My laptop suddenly crashed and now it won't detect a hard drive. I has happened before, and it eventually let me in, but now it won't. What should I do?

Sounds like the hard drive has failed/is failing and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will replace it. If not a retail 2.5" laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use HP Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

Hello natgarcia,

I agree with CherylG, the drive seems failed, and it will be great if you can replace it as soon as possible. Also, want to suggest you Windows data recovery software in case you have important data in that undetected hard drive. You can download the Stellar Windows data recovery software and use the search lost volume option to recover your data from the unrecognized hard drive.

Thanks!!
