I replaced the battery in my laptop two times.  The new batteries discharge substantially overnight when the laptop is shutdown, just like the old battery did.  I've tried different ways to shutdown the computer but none solve the problem.  Any ideas?

I've run into exactly the SAME issue with an older HP laptop -- and the only "solution" I have found is to remove the battery when I put the laptop aside for any length of time.

It could be a situation that when you supposedly shut down the laptop it is only going to sleep or hibernating -- so you should check that in the Settings, Power options.  And if that is the case, change the options to power down the laptop.

But that does not always work -- as I found out.  So, removing the battery might be the only option.
