Pavilion Laptop doesn't power on. Screen flashes, fan comes on briefly, HDD and Power lights blink. It does this a few times but can be stopped by holding the power button. Power button and F11 or power button and F2 - nothing happens.

Hi @Bob20001,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Pavilion laptop is not powering on and you're experiencing issues like screen flashing, fan coming on briefly, HDD and Power lights blinking, and it can be stopped by holding the power button, there are several potential causes and solutions to consider. Please follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue.
-
Check the power source:
- Make sure your laptop is connected to a working power source, and the power adapter is properly plugged into both the laptop and the power outlet.
- Verify that the power adapter is functioning correctly by checking for any visible damage, and try using a different power outlet if possible.
-
Inspect the battery:
- If your laptop has a removable battery, try removing it and then reinsert it. Dust or debris on the battery contacts can sometimes cause issues.
- If the battery is non-removable, leave it connected to the laptop and proceed to the next steps.
-
Perform a hard reset:
- Unplug the laptop from the power source.
- Disconnect all external devices (such as USB devices, external monitors, etc.).
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. This will drain any residual power from the laptop.
- Reconnect the power adapter and try turning on the laptop.
-
Check for display issues:
- If the screen is flashing but not displaying anything, it could be a display issue. Connect your laptop to an external monitor to see if it's outputting any signal to the external display. If the external monitor works, it could be a laptop display or cable issue.
-
Inspect RAM and storage:
- If possible, open the laptop and reseat the RAM modules and hard drive/SSD. Sometimes, loose connections can cause power issues.
-
Perform a BIOS reset:
- While holding down the power button, simultaneously press and hold the "Windows" key and the "B" key on your keyboard. This key combination will initiate a BIOS recovery process.
- Keep holding the keys until the laptop powers on and you see a BIOS update screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update or recover the BIOS.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
