Hi @billhvac1967,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the issue you're describing with your HP Pavilion 17-f071nr Notebook PC, where the power button comes on, the caps lock button flashes, and there's a black screen with a beeping noise, indicates a hardware-related issue, often related to memory (RAM) or display problems. The flashing Caps Lock key and beeps usually correspond to a specific error code that can help identify the problem.
Troubleshooting Steps:
1. Check the Beep Code
- The number of beeps and the flashing pattern of the Caps Lock key represent a specific hardware error. Count the number of beeps or flashes (e.g., 2 beeps, 3 beeps, etc.) and refer to HP’s beep code guide to identify the issue.
2. Hard Reset the Notebook
- Turn off the notebook.
- Disconnect the power adapter.
- Remove the battery (if possible).
- Hold down the power button for 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
- Reconnect the power adapter without the battery and try turning on the notebook.
3. Reseat the RAM
- Power off the laptop and unplug the AC adapter.
- Open the back cover of the laptop to access the RAM.
- Carefully remove the RAM sticks and reinsert them to ensure they are seated properly.
- If you have two RAM sticks, try booting with one stick at a time to identify if one might be faulty.
4. Check the Display
- Connect an external monitor to your laptop using an HDMI or VGA cable. If the external monitor shows a display, it indicates the issue might be with your laptop’s screen or display cable.
5. Battery and Power Issues
- Try booting the laptop with the battery removed, using only the AC adapter. If this resolves the issue, the battery may be faulty.
6. BIOS Reset
- Power off the notebook.
- Hold down the "Windows" + "B" keys simultaneously, then press and hold the power button for 3 seconds. Release the power button but continue to hold the "Windows" + "B" keys until the BIOS recovery screen appears. If this works, follow the prompts to reset the BIOS.
