HP Pavilion 15 - n090sa
Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have a HP Pavilion 15 - n090sa laptop that has got a power on password applied to it that I can't remove. I have read in previous discussions regarding this that if i try and enter a password 3 times it will give me a system disable message with a Hash key below it, unfortunately I do not get this hash key. So how do I remove this password.

Thanks to any who reply.

Hi,

You're welcome :generic:

Your machine has a Insyde bios which I would expect to produce a 8 digit halt code.

Other than contacting HP, the only other suggestion I have would be to Shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out for the moment ) and see if you now get any halt after hitting enter 3 times.

At the password screen, hit enter 3 times and you should receive a 8 digit code - post back with the halt code you're receiving.

If you're not receiving any halt code, then you'll need to Contact HP regarding this.

Hi,

Thanks, the 30 sec rule appears to have worked but only after removing my HDD which makes me think it may have been a virus on my HDD the was placing it into the BIOS, therefore wasn't getting the halt box after 3 attempts. Have purchased replacement HDD to confirm. (Didn't have a replacement to hand).

Hi,

You're welcome and a good idea to remove the drive :generic:

If the power on password spontaneously appeared, this can quite often be as a result of a failing hard drive - the fact that you had to remove the HDD in order to get a halt code would also tend to support this.

All the best,
