Hello everyone!

 

I'm experiencing a common issue with Ryzen 2500U and Linux kernel: a soft lockup, caused by unidentified reasons but known to be related to C6 processor states. The system may just randomly hang at any time, causing loss of important data.

 

A kernel bug report #196683 was submitted for a while ago but it is not resolved yet. It is known that manufacturers release a BIOS update that solves this issue [1], but my particular BIOS does not even allows changing advanced settings like "Typical Current Idle" - there's simply no Advanced tab. Interestingly enough, HP 17-ca0202ng received a BIOS update (F4 -> F10) and is reliable now [2]. Initially, AMD released multiple Erratas related to this [3], specifically Errata 1033 "A Lock Operation May Cause the System to Hang" and 1109 "MWAIT Instruction May Hang a Thread". Reportedly, this issue is solved on AMD side in latest AGESA update [1], and I would be happy to know when new BIOS will be released by HP for my laptop, if at all.
