HP Recommended

I have an HP Z-Book that I mostly use as a desktop computer with a Thunderbolt Dock (which came "free" with the computer and I figure might have been refurbished, but that's a guess).  This lets me use multiple screens and peripherals when I'm here and I only have to unplug 1 wire (power and seperate data line attached together sort of in one jack).  I love it  BUT  the dock has always been sensitive to handling.  I don't move stuff on my desktop around much, so it took a while to figure out why every three months or so I have the random experience where my computer just shuts off like a light switch.  Everything lost, every program crashed, and it usually takes a couple of tries to boot it before I figured out that unplugging the dock from the computer makes that faster.  Is there any way to reduce or eliminate this problem short of buying a new dock?
