HP ZBook Fury 15.6 inch G8 Mobile Workstation PC (31Z44AV)

Summary: Which USB ports & SD slots can be used to boot?

The ZBook Fury G8 offers

  • on the left: 2 USB-A ports
  • on the right: 2 USB-C ports and 1 SD card slot

In the Setup Menu (System BIOS T95 Ver. 01.20.00) / Advanced / Boot Options there's an option "USB Storage Boot" and no option relating to the SD card. "USB Storage Boot" is enabled.

  1. I've put a bootable SD card in the SD card slot, turned the device on and then opened the Boot Menu (F9). There was no entry for the SD card or an USB device.
  2. I've put a bootable USB stick in one of the left USB-A ports, turned the device on and then opened the Boot Menu (F9). There was no entry for the USB device.
  3. I've put a bootable USB stick in one of the right USB-C ports, turned the device on and then opened the Boot Menu (F9). There is an entry for the USB device, and booting works fine.

This is unexpected to me. In a ZBook Fury G7, the BIOS offers an option to boot from SD card, and booting is possible from all USB ports and the SD slot.

Is there a documentation for this behavior? Can someone confirm that this is expected?
