Hi @dasher211
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
The beeping pattern and blinking caps lock light indicate that your HP laptop is trying to communicate a hardware issue.
Based on the description, the 5 beeps in a series of 3 often point to a system board or BIOS-related issue. Let’s work through some steps to troubleshoot this:
Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off your laptop completely.
- Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, peripherals, etc.).
- Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
- Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
- Reconnect the charger (and battery, if applicable) and try turning on the laptop.
Step 2: Reset the BIOS
- Turn off your laptop and press Win + B (or Win + V) while holding down the Power button for 2-3 seconds.
- Release the Power button but continue holding Win + B (or Win + V) until the BIOS recovery screen appears.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to recover or reset the BIOS.
Step 3: Check for Loose Components
- If you’re comfortable opening your laptop, check that the RAM modules are securely seated in their slots.
- Remove and reinsert the RAM to ensure proper contact.
- Inspect the motherboard for any visible damage or loose connections.
Step 4: Run Hardware Diagnostics
- Turn on your laptop and press Esc repeatedly to access the Startup Menu.
- Select F2 to run the HP Hardware Diagnostics.
- Perform a System Test to identify any hardware issues.
