my laptop won't turn on, I will click the power button, the screen will stay black accept a small rectangle in upper left corner, after this disappears, the screen goes completely dark and every couple of seconds the entire screen will blink white and shut off once more, leaving me with nothing but a black screen that won't turn on at all.

Hi @natalie120,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop won't turn on and exhibits the described behavior, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

A hard reset can help resolve many startup issues.

  1. Turn Off the Laptop: Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  2. Drain Residual Power: Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds.
  3. Reconnect Power: Reinsert the battery (if removed) and connect the power adapter.
  4. Turn On the Laptop: Press the power button to see if the laptop turns on.

Step 2: Check for External Devices

Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, external hard drives, printers, etc.) and try turning on the laptop again.

Step 3: Boot into Safe Mode

Try to boot the laptop into Safe Mode.

  1. Turn On the Laptop: Press the power button.
  2. Interrupt Boot Process: As soon as you see the HP logo, press and hold the power button to turn off the laptop. Repeat this 2-3 times to trigger Windows Recovery Environment.
  3. Access Advanced Startup Options: On the third attempt, let the laptop boot. It should enter the Windows Recovery Environment.
  4. Boot into Safe Mode:
    • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings.
    • Click Restart and then press F4 or 4 to boot into Safe Mode.

Step 4: Check for Hardware Issues

Hardware issues can prevent the laptop from turning on properly.

Reseat RAM and Hard Drive:

  • If you're comfortable doing so, open the laptop and reseat the RAM and hard drive.
  • Make sure they are securely connected.

External Monitor Test:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor to check if the issue is with the laptop's display.

Step 5: Perform a BIOS Recovery

If the BIOS is corrupted, you might need to perform a BIOS recovery.

  1. Turn Off the Laptop: Press and hold the power button to turn off the laptop.
  2. Create a BIOS Recovery USB Drive: On another computer, visit the HP website and search for BIOS recovery instructions for your laptop model.
  3. Insert the USB Drive: Insert the BIOS recovery USB drive into the laptop.
  4. Initiate BIOS Recovery: Follow the instructions to initiate BIOS recovery.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
