Envy X2
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

I was updating Windows 8.1 and had an error.  It will now not boot up.  Says Preparing Automatic Repair but doesn't repair or start.  I can get the info by pressing F9 to start but now d not know how to get it to undo last updates. Unfortunately I have misplaced my system recovery USB.

Have you tried F11 instead of F9 to boot into recovery/reset options?

When I do that it comes up Diagnosing your PC.  Then says Windows couldn't load correctly.  System retore can try to retore your PC ..... etc .    There are two rectangles, one with the word Restore and one with Cancel.  I can not choose Restore. System does not respond.

@Jayefaye

The hard drive may actually be failing. Can you run any diagnostics by tapping Esc, then F2 immediately after powering on?

If the drive passes testing you can make a bootable Window 8.1 usb drive following Paul's directions here. He added attachment with the program to convert the ISO into a bootable usb drive. You can boot with it and choose to try "Repair" before doing a new install. It should pick up your key from BIOS but if not just use the generic Paul listed:

Near the bottom of the page it tells how to run Repairs on Windows 8 with the bootable drive:

Thank you for your response.   When I try to run both the short test and long test the programs says

Smart Check: NOT INSTALLED

Long DST: NOT INSTALLED

I ran a Memory test and that passed and will try to make the boot USB.

I am typing this on my HP All-In_one which has now starting flashing frequently, after the last updates.  I hardly use the PC's as I mainly use my tablet but may be time for a new one.

It appears the hard drive has failed in the Envy X2. A hard drive is relatively inexpensive but not sure how easy it would be to replace in an X2 and if you paid a shop to do it that would be extra.

If you think you want to try it I would need the full Model or Product Number to find the Service Guide.
