Windows 11. (Recent Updates 5 weeks ago)

New battery installed today

No charge light on first charge of new battery. Laptop is very warm, but not hot during the initial charge of this new internal battery.

Battery is connected. Checked  battery connection to port for 5+ minutes.

Battery: BXO3XL

Laptop is warm

Adapter in wall socket. New adapter.

Charge light never appeared.

Unplugged the charger (just in case)

Plugged Laptop in again

Now, the laptop is sitting atop a well-insulated  Frozen pack.  No moisture danger.. I must protect the mother board and hard drive.

Still, no charge light (Orange or light blue)

Charge time 2+hours (with the one unplugging).

Hi @SWDesign1031

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It appears you are facing issues with the new battery for your HP 15-ew0023dx laptop. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot this problem:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

Re-seat the Battery Ensure the battery is securely connected to the laptop. Double-check the connection to make sure it is properly seated in the port.

Check the Charger Verify that the charger is functioning correctly. Try using another compatible charger to rule out a faulty charger. Ensure that the wall socket is working.

Reset the Laptop Perform a hard reset on your laptop to restart its power management. To do this:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the charger.
  • Remove the battery (if possible).
  • Hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual electrical energy.
  • Reconnect the battery and charger, then turn on the laptop.

Windows Power Management Settings Sometimes, Windows updates can interfere with power management settings. Verify that these settings are appropriately configured:

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
  • Ensure that the sleep settings are not causing the laptop to enter a low-power state improperly.

Update Battery Drivers

  • Open Device Manager (Press Win + X and select Device Manager).
  • Under the Battery section, right-click on each battery-related entry and select Update driver.

BIOS Update Ensure your BIOS is up-to-date as newer versions can provide improved battery management:

  • Visit the HP Support website and check for any BIOS updates for your laptop model.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics Use the HP Hardware Diagnostics tool to test the battery:

  • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly during startup.
  • Navigate to Component Tests > Power > Battery.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to test the battery.

Laptop will not boot.

If a laptop is plugged-in without the battery, it should boot (no matter what). So, I cannot upgrade BIOS, Divers, Windows, etc.

Previously. If a battery was bad, I could just remove the battery, plug-in the power cord, turn it on. Only one way to Power-On this Laptop, Type C USB. So, if those ports are gone, it will not power

Everything appears to be OK. Never dropped. No liquid damage.

Immediately, no warmth.

Note:

Windows sent an upgrade.

Now. I discover on forums that a Windows 11 upgrade might shut-down your BIOS, and the new drivers cannot recognize your accessories.

Well, if an upgrade is not safe for my PC, what can I do?

New USB Type-Ca charger 7 days ago.

"iCreate 100w Type C USB Charger"

OEM HP Type-C  charger "frayed" and the plastic cover slipped-out of the base

No OEM plugs or batteries sold in local stores. So, I bought the iCreate

Previously, 2 weeks ago:

Windows did not recognize the Orinal OEM Type C  USB Charger. Successful charges with the I create for a weekend.

The Power Button reset did not work with this laptop, as with others. Then, I had no choice but to mail+order a new battery. A new HP OEM Type C Charger will arrive in 6 days.

Thanks for updating us.

Here’s what we know and what you can try in the meantime:

🔍 What Might Be Happening

  • The iCreate 100W charger, while powerful, may not fully comply with HP’s USB-C power delivery handshake protocols. Some third-party chargers don’t trigger charging or BIOS-level power-on behavior correctly.
  • A new battery warming up but not charging and showing no LED indicators suggests the system isn’t recognizing or initializing the battery properly—possibly due to firmware-level safeguards or charger incompatibility.

🛠 What You Can Try Now

Let the Battery Cool Completely
Since it’s warm, unplug everything and let the laptop sit powered off for at least 30 minutes on a cool, dry surface.

Try a CMOS Reset (if accessible)
Some HP models allow a reset by holding Windows + V or Windows + B, then pressing the power button for 2–3 seconds. Release the power button but keep holding the keys for 10–15 seconds.

Try a Different USB-C Port
If your laptop has multiple USB-C ports, try charging from the other one—some ports are data-only or have limited power roles.

Wait for the OEM Charger
Once your HP OEM charger arrives, try charging again. HP’s firmware is often tuned to recognize only specific power profiles.

If the OEM charger doesn’t resolve it, the issue may lie with the battery connector, charging circuit, or even a firmware lockout triggered by the previous charger fault.

You’ve done everything right so far—just a little more patience, and we’ll get this sorted.

Thanks,

Thanks for your help. My new HP OEM USB Type C Laptop Charger should arrive early next week. The iCreate charged the laptop fine 2 weeks ago. Maybe, too much wattage? (from 75w to 100w capacity)

I.unplugged the iCreate charger as soon as I created this thread .Since then, no heat at all when I try, but the iCreate charges my other devices.

As soon as my HP charger arrives, I will try all of your instructions again. Not attempting anything else until then.

Question: Re-install the original battery?

I will take it to be repaired if all else fails.

I only use this laptop on the weekends mostly. I never exposed it to rain or liquid, and no drops in or out of a case.

@SWDesign1031

Thanks for the thoughtful update—it’s great that you’re being cautious and methodical here.

Since the laptop stopped heating up after unplugging the iCreate charger, it’s wise to hold off until the HP OEM charger arrives. That will give us a clean baseline to work from.

Here’s how you can proceed once the new charger is in hand:

🔌 Step 1: Try Charging with the HP OEM Adapter

  • Plug in the new charger and observe whether the charging LED lights up.
  • If the laptop powers on or shows signs of charging, let it sit for 15–30 minutes before turning it on.

🔋 Step 2: Reinstall the Original Battery (Optional)

If the new battery still doesn’t respond:

  • Yes, you can reinstall the original battery (if it was working previously) to help isolate whether the issue is with the new battery or the charging circuit.
  • Be sure to power off the laptop and disconnect the charger before swapping batteries.

🧰 Step 3: Perform a Hard Reset

Once the battery is in place:

  1. Disconnect the charger.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the charger and try powering on the laptop.

🧪 Step 4: Run HP Battery Check

Once the system powers on, use the HP Support Assistant to run a battery diagnostic:

  • Open HP Support Assistant > Battery > Run Battery Check
Or visit HP Battery Check for step-by-step guidance.

You’re doing everything right by being patient and protecting your device. Once the HP charger arrives, we’ll have a much clearer picture. And if things still don’t improve, I’ll help you prepare for service without missing a beat.

Let’s get your weekends back on track!

Thanks,
