The specs say this 17.3 Envy Model 17M-CG0013DX it can be upgraded from store 12gb memory to 32 and possibly 64 with a bios update. I opened it up and to my dismay it was not staring me in the center the way is has been since 1990? I dont see it under the black plastic covers and the metal piece center dosent look like it pops up.

Hi:
Yes, that metal plate does cover the memory, and there is a warning notice in some of the manuals that have this cover, to carefully remove it lest you cut your fingers in the process of removing the metal cover.
Your manual does not have this warning.

I appreciate your help as it worked nicely. Would you know the part numbers for this model to connect a HDD in the spare bay. It has the caddy so I need the cable number and I guess the connector from the HD to the cable.
I appreciate your help.
Thanks again

Anytime.
Glad to have been of assistance.
You can find the part numbers you need to add a 2.5" drive in chapter 3, page 21 of the service manual.
That appears to be the only part required and if there are additional parts required, they are not listed.
(3) Hard Drive connector/cable L87952-001
The problem is that the part is not orderable from HP, so you will have to find it elsewhere from a 3rd party reseller.
If you are unable to find the part you need, you could always replace the 512 GB NVMe SSD with one having a larger storage capacity.
According to the Crucial memory/SSD report for your notebook, you can go as high as a 2 TB NVMe drive.

Then use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook on the larger capacity SSD.
Here is an info link for how to use the cloud recovery tool...
