Pavillion al118na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I've recently bought a HP Pavillion al118na which comes with a 256gb SSD as standard. I'm just wondering whether there is an additional slot to fit an additional HDD in the casing.

Thanks.

Since I do not work for HP I am going to be straight up honest here. There are a lot of issues right now with drive upgrades on HP laptops. You have the question of whether you can even do an upgrade and keep the waranty. You also have issues with the accuracy of manuals. HP offers more different models than the rest of the laptop manufacturers combined I think and it is tough to keep up with the configuration of each. Studying this manual I believe you can have either a SATA 2.5 inch HDD/SSD OR an M.2 mSSD "gumstick" drive, but not both.

Why do I think this? A couple clues. There is no offering of a dual drive configuration, which you could have if there were 2 separate slots. Also the Manual refers to a solid state drive bracket which is not shown and there is also a solid state drive cable. Lastly the hard drive does not plug right into the motherboard but uses a cable that plugs into a zif connector on the motherboard. I believe if you opened your laptop you would find your 256 gig SATA M.2 SSD sitting in a drive adapter in the same place you would put a 2.5 inch drive with a cable connected to the zif header on the motherboard.

So I do not think you can do it, long story short. Since the HP manual omits pictures of exactly how an M.2 is attached the only way to prove otherwise, I am afraid, is to open her up which I would not do lightly.
