I'm not sure but my laptop won't boot normally. But that's a different thread. Long story short no warranty so I sent it to an 'IT friend's of mine. Tells me the battery was corroded but can't fix the boot issue. Laid the laptop away for a couple months then something tells me to look at it myself. I've got my SATA hard drive, but that's it and this big open space.... Am I missing something?

Hi:
The notebook has a M.2 SSD which you can see to the right of the battery.
It is that rather skinny rectangular object with the white label on it in the M.2 slot.
It is 22mm wide and 80mm long.
That is the drive.
Chapter 1 of the service manual indicates that some models in the series come with 2.5" drives and some come with M.2 solid state drives, and some come configured with both a 2.5" drive used for storage, and a M.2 SSD used for the operating system and programs.
Yours is one of those that only came with a M.2 solid state drive.

Yes, that is for a 2.5" drive but like I wrote above, your particular notebook was one of those that only came with a M.2 SSD.
Since it was not one of the few models in the series that came with both types of drives, the parts are usually not there to connect a 2.5" drive to the motherboard.
The parts needed for that can be found in chapter 3, page 18 of the service manual.
(25) Hard drive cable (includes double-sided adhesive) 857806-001
(26) Hard drive rubber bracket 857797-001
I recommend that if the M.2 SSD is not working you can:
Use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive to reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with the notebook on the SSD
If you know the drive is bad, replace it and then use the cloud recovery tool.
