Hello,

I have a Victus by HP 16-d1004no (SKU: 6W326EA) with the following specifications:

Motherboard/ROM Family SSID: 8A25

Current BIOS: F.14

Processor: Intel 12th Gen Core i7-12700H

I want to know if it is safe to update my BIOS to a newer version, such as F.20 Rev.A or F.26 Rev.A.

Could anyone confirm if these BIOS versions are compatible with my motherboard SSID, or if there is a recommended BIOS update for this model?

Thank you for your help!

Hello angcek.

On the HP Support page for your gaming laptop you can take a look at all the drivers available. By expanding the BIOS section current and previous firmware versions are listed. F20 is actually newer than the F26 one. This Official HP page informs us about the AMD update the F26 BIOS version provides, and if you expand the Consumer Notebook category at the bottom of the page you will see that sp158377 is actually meant for another Victus, one with an AMD processor. Normally this SoftPaq will not install on your system. Apparently the F26 version appearing as a recommended update for your Victus is a mistake -by HP.

Is it safe to upgrade to version F20 from F14 -more importantly should you do it? Yes and no. Most times BIOS upgrades go as intended and the newer firmware installed has various bug fixes. There are times however when an error occurs and the system ends up with a corrupted BIOS -meaning the laptop is bricked. It's also important to understand that laptop manufacturers often introduce various power and other limits to systems with the newer BIOS versions. Many people came here on the forum when this Victus got updated from F06 to a higher version and reported that their CPU was suddenly underperforming. Personally, I only upgrade the UEFI firmware if there is a specific bug I want to get rid of OR the BIOS has some new feature I need.
