HP Envy x360 14 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-fa-0000 (8Z8P7AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I began to notice almost two months ago that my laptop goes from a lower percentage (any percent that is not close to 100%), to 100% immediately I close the lid or power of the system. I've had this laptop for about a year now, and its only about two months ago that I noticed. I didn't change any bios setting for this to happen and it's not Windows (since it happens when the laptop is switched off too). The battery isn't old neither is it "weared" out. It's wear level is still less than 5%, and I don't think it's a bios setting since the only setting that is available (and that has been enabled since I first got the laptop) is "adaptive battery optimizer". I even tried disabling it and the same issue still occurred, so I left it open. I'm guessing it might be a BIOS update since it started occuring recently, but I'm not sure. It doesn't occur while the laptop is in active use, but only when it's powered off or sleeping. Lastly, yes, I'm using the certified HP charger that came with the laptop. Has anyone else also experienced this issue? And what is the solution to this?

Hi @kxng1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your laptop battery is jumping from a lower percentage to 100% immediately when the laptop is powered off or put to sleep. Let’s go through some steps to diagnose and address this behavior.

1. Understand Battery Calibration

The behavior you’re seeing is often due to the battery charge indicator being out of sync with the actual charge.

Modern laptops sometimes report the battery percentage inaccurately after long use or after firmware/BIOS updates.

This is more common with smart batteries that adjust charging behavior to optimize lifespan.

2. Perform a Battery Calibration

Fully charge the battery to 100% while the laptop is powered on.

Use the laptop normally until it discharges completely and shuts down automatically.

Recharge fully to 100% without interruption.

This helps the system recalibrate the battery’s state-of-charge sensor.

3. Check for BIOS/Firmware Updates

Go to HP Support and check for latest BIOS updates for your laptop model.

Sometimes recent updates change battery reporting behavior, but subsequent updates may fix it.

4. Disable Adaptive Battery Temporarily

You mentioned Adaptive Battery Optimizer is enabled, try disabling it temporarily to see if it affects the behavior.

Go to BIOS → Power Settings → Adaptive Battery Optimizer → Disable and test charging behavior when powered off or sleeping.

5. Battery Diagnostics

Run the HP Hardware Diagnostics Battery Test:

Power on the laptop and press ESC repeatedly. → Select Diagnostics → Component Tests → Battery.

Check the battery’s health and charge capacity.

Even if wear is low, this test can identify anomalies with charge reporting.

6. Consider a System Reset (If Persistent)

If calibration and BIOS settings don’t resolve the issue, performing a Windows power reset can help:

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:

powercfg /batteryreport

Generate a report and check for unusual charge cycles or anomalies.

7. Normal Behavior Note

Some HP laptops with smart batteries report 100% immediately when powered off due to internal charge balancing.

As long as battery health is good and the laptop operates normally while in use, this is usually not harmful.

I hope this helps.
