HP Spectre 13-v051na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I'm trying to discover if I need to replace the battery in this laptop. If I fully charge the battery and then leave it to perform a download of a big file (60+GB), and allow the screen to blank after a few minutes, the battery lasts for between 1.5 and 2 hours. There is nothing else running on the laptop with the exception of the ever present virus checker.

Running the HP Support Assistant and checking the battery status, it returns 'OK', which according to the notes means there is nothing wrong with the battery.

However, every where I read suggests I should be getting much longer usage before having to recharge the battery.

Thak you for your assistance,

Mick

Thank you for joining the HP Community

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also, ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

If the issue persists, refer to this document: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04700771 for Testing and Calibrating the Battery.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Thank you for your support and help. I already had all the HP updates installed, but I now have all Windows updates as well. This did not help the battery life on my laptop. I performed a test with the support assistant and it pretty much said the same as when I first tried it (all good). I then performed the manual calibration. It took ~90 minutes for my battery to totally discharge running the memory test. I left my laptop turned off, but recharging for over 3 hours then turned it on again and booted into windows. The battery icon showed 100% charged, so I ran the battery diagnostic again. It said the same thing, that the battery is good, but the battery is still discharging rapidly. After ~15 minutes my battery is already down to 90%.

I have attached screenshots of the test results. Thanks.
