Microsoft Windows 11

Hi

I am looking to add more RAM to the hp 15s-fq4553sa laptop.

can anyone tell me how easy it is / what would be involved?

Also if possible, what RAM it would need?

many thanks

Richard

Service manual

If you have not worked on a laptop before it is hard for me to say how "easy" you will find this. Getting the rubber strips off the bottom without damage and then opening the casing can be somewhat of a challenge.

Needed memory is DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM. Max is actually 32 gigs, not the 16 reported in the Manual.

Thankyou Huffer

i have seen a YouTube video on disassembling the eq series but wasn’t sure whether the fq was the same or whether the memory is even replaceable.

my worst fear was taking it apart to find the memory soldered in like they do on a Mac. As you say, looking at the YouTube video, I can see that ensuring you don’t damage the rubber strips and also separating the two halves is a challenge. I have replaced memory and HDD in desktops a while ago but no experience with laptops.

I think I’ll give it a try.

thanks very much

You're going to need a cheap (if it's just for this) cell phone repair kit. They work best seperating the bottom base from the top, without damaging the plastic like a small screwdriver or pocketknife. You might check the screws in the service manual, they have a habit of sneaking in some torx screws on a few of them.

Thankyou both for your advice.

got myself a mobile fixit kit which really helped.
as you both suggested - getting the case off was about 3/4 of the time taken.

after that, everything was fairly straightforward.

thanks again

Hi Can I just ask, I assume this did work, as I am going to buy the same model hp 15s-fq4553sa , and want to be sure it can be upgraded, as the service manual and memory listed are for the 14s fq series, so just want to double check its still the same memory required for upgrade.

Many thanks.

Hi Bruce It did yes. I didn’t buy the exact RAM in the link provided by huffer as I’m from uk but the same type of RAM.

this video is a step by step guide. Again it’s for a different machine but the steps, layout etc were exactly the same. I found this very useful.

In theory you are supposed to have the same type of memory in each slot if you are filling both slots so I got 2 * 8gb modules and took out the 4gb which was in there.

the RAM I got is here:

Crucial RAM CT2K8G4SFRA32A 16GB... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08C4WV6FT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

and I also got this which helped with getting the case off (which was a bit fiddly)

just be careful on the price - i got the 16GB kit but I see that it’s now cheaper to get 2 of the 8gb.
