Hey! Kind of a multifaceted question here, so I apologize.
So I'm looking to upgrade my HP ENVY 17-j173cl. I'm looking to do a 256GB SSD + 1TB 7200 RPM HDD, which is apparently supported. I found this website:
which shows exactly what I need... supposedly, however they don't mention the make and model of any of the drives which just kind of worries me.
Also, I found some drives on PCPARTPICKER that have pretty much the same specs and would save me about 25 bucks. Found here:
https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Kidnapster/saved/w6dZLk
Would any of these be compatible or do I have to get the ones specifically paired with the make of my laptop?
Also, are there any particular limitations to upgrading this way? I've read that people have had problems getting windows to recognize SSDs in the primary mount, which sounds wrong, but you never know.

I used to have one of this model series as my HP "Expert loaner", used it for a year, conducted all kinds of experiments on drive configurations then donated it to charity so I have likely learned as much as there is to know about what you are trying to do. First thing is do you have a caddy and cable for both drive bays?
There is a link there with instructions.
Yes it will run a 2.5 inch SATA SSD. Brand is not that important but if you are looking for a recommendation this model series has generated virtually zero problem reports here and is the one I use if I need a 2.5 inch SSD:
In the secondary bay, you can use again any 2.5 inch wide SATA hard drive and you are smart to pick a 7200 rpm model.
You can safely buy on price. Here is a sale on a very good mechanical drive, about as fast as they come:
Post back if you need to discuss hardware setup or software installation. You are definitely on the right track with your plans and an SSD/HDD combination will keep that machine "relevant" as long as possible.
If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.
