I am looking for any information available to help me understand certain model numbers. I have an Envy 17t u109 and I have noticed several other “U” (Ex u100 and u177 for examples )models with the same hardware. Is there a way to understand the pattern to these different models? The laptops look the same and sometimes use the same motherboard.

You can see from u100aa to u199zz. The ones with t o z (for example 17t or 17z) are CTO (or Config/Customize To Order) machines which are only available in the US. aa and zz (or sometimes 3 characters) are for country/region code and HP uses few ways for country/region codes therefore more confusion.
Anyway, we can't decode nnn or nnnn (000 to 999 or 0000 to 9999). HP used to have larger number is newer machine but not now. HP now has a new way to set "family" members therefore finding a model of a machine now is a night mare for all of us.
Regards.
