It can take either type of M.2 SSD 2280 form factor and of course you want to install an NVME SSD.

With back cover removed its laid out like this. M.2 slot circled in red:

green = HDD red = M.2green = HDD red = M.2

Post back with any more questions and please accept as solution if this is the info you needed.

Thanks for that info, Huffer!
Could you please share how you identified that specifically? The user manual is obviously vague, as it is based on the laptop (15) series.  I am unable to find any compatibility data specifically related to my "BaseBoard Product 881D". Are you aware of a way to find a correlation between a specific hp mobo and compatible drives?

HP Recommended

The Manual is based on a model series. Do not focus on the motherboard identifiers, focus on the specific model of the laptop the motherboard comes from. Just google for example, "HP 15-du3000 manuals". Round the model number down to the nearest even 100 or 1000 number. Been doing this quite a while and this method works most of the time. I also have access to an HP ftp site but do not need to even use that very often.
