Assuming nothing goes wrong, you can upgrade the memory.

That said, there are three memory modules listed for your machine in the Maintenance and Service Guide.

Chapter 3, Page 20 - Item #9

(9)

Memory modules (2, DDR4, 2666 MHz, 1.2 V):

16 GB

937438-855

8 GB

937236-855

4 GB

L10598-855

Removal and Replacement procedures are explained in Chapter 4, starting on Page 26.

Original question and Answer

You can upgrade the memory without voiding your warranty

I perhaps do not understand your question regarding the types and sizes of memory.

No need to add the different modules together -

Each module is an individual stick - the three are not meant to be one set "together".

From Page 1 of the Maintenance and Service Guide:

Memory
Support for DDR4-2666, 1.2 V system memory
Support for up to 32-GB of system memory in the following configurations:

32-GB (16-GB×2)
16-GB (16-GB×1)
16-GB (8-GB×2)
12-GB (8-GB×1 + 4-GB×1)
8-GB (8-GB×1)
8-GB (4-GB×2)
4-GB (4-GB×1)
