What is a reason that my fan would stop working? Is that common? I’ve never had one quit on me before. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hi,

It happens that fans stop working, they hape moving parts which can be affected by many things. So fans and HDD will sooner or later fail. Are you getting an error code on startup?

The part number for the heatsink/fan combo for your notebook is 641024-001

you can find only the fan by searching online with part number

Ex:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-HP-640897-001-685087-001-657145-001-641024-001-Notebook-PC-series-CPU-F...

 

On page 73 of service manual you can see how to remove the heatsink/fan assembly. You should check if you need to actually remove the whole heatsink to replace the fan. If you remove the heatsink, you will need to clean off the old thermal paste and pads and replace with quality product.
