HP 14-al062nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a 14-al062nr laptop with 12GB of ram, running an Intel core i5. I use it mostly for school work, no gaming. I’m wanting to upgrade the DDR4 RAM in this but, aside from taking 1 computer class my sophomore year, I have not a clue where to begin as far as selecting the right RAM or if it’s even possible on this platform.

The laptop works just fine for what I do, I just find myself running low on RAM when doing research projects with lots of tabs open in Microsoft Edge. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi:

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05122703

You can install up to 2 x 8 GB in your model.

Below is the link to the crucial memory report for your notebook.

You can remove the 4 GB memory chip in there, and replace it with an 8 GB chip to max out the memory...

https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/pavilion-14-al062nr

You would want the DDR4-2400 MHz 8 GB memory chip for your notebook.

It is not going to make a huge difference in performance.

It would be better to replace the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" SSD, but that would require reinstalling W10 and your programs and files.

Thanks Paul! One more probably really stupid question. In the manual you linked, it states that the RAM is "non-accessible/non-upgradeable". Is that actually the case or am I still able to replace the 4GB stick with an 8GB stick, bringing me to 16GB?

You're very welcome.

That statement is there because HP wants upgrades done by an authorized service center.

You can find the memory removal and replacement procedure in chapter 5 of the service manual.

After you read the instructions, if you feel you can do the job yourself without breaking anything in the process, you can feel free to do so.
