My HP 15-bs178cl Notebook compatible with m.2 ssd? If so, why?

Hi:

 

Your notebook's M.2 slot supports SATA SSD's only, not NVMe.

 

See chapter 1 of the service manual for the supported drive types.

Yes, chapter 3 of the manual indicates that dual drive configurations are supported but you can't have Windows on the 2.5" drive or the PC will always want to boot from that drive first.

 

You may find that a 120 GB SSD does not have enough storage capacity.

 

You may want to consider upping the drive to at least a 240 GB one. 

 

It is not that much more expensive--just $7 USD more for double the storage.
