Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

That must be hard. Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,

If you are unable to recover the last working BIOS version, install a BIOS recovery file from the HP website using a USB flash drive.
Here is the YouTube video: Creating a BIOS Recovery Flash Drive for HP Notebooks

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I have exactly the same issue after a windows update of the bios.

Most recent BIOS (sp134485 from HP website) extracts BIOS_Update.exe but that does not open on five different computers that I've tried including two HP laptops. Older versions open but say "invalid signature" or something like that when I try Windows+B and turn it on.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue.

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg .
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Have you even read what either of us wrote??

It's impossible to download and install updates when an update has put the computer into a BIOS recovery loop.

The BIOS file on the HP website doesn't work

Thank you for posting back.

Just to be clear your computer does not boot into windows desktop, is that correct?

If the computer cannot boot to Windows, it is just because the data in the Embedded Controller (EC) is corrupted. Use this procedure to reset the EC.

  1. Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cord.

  2. Press and hold the power button for 11 seconds.

The computer turns on and the EC is reset. If this does not recover your computer, follow the next step:

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Press and hold the Windows + V keys, and then simultaneously press and hold the power button. After 2 to 3 seconds, continue to press and hold the Windows + V keys, but release the power button.

  3. When the CMOS Reset screen displays or you hear beeping sounds, release the Windows + V keys.

At the completion of a successful CMOS Reset, a message similar to the following one is displayed.

    Successful CMOS reset button message

  4. Press enter to restart the computer.

If this does not recover your computer, follow the next step:

Recover the BIOS using a keypress combination

    • Turn off the computer and be sure that the AC adapter is connected to power.

    • Press and hold the Windows + B keys, and then simultaneously press the power button.

Keyboard highlighting the key presses for BIOS recovery

    • After 2 to 3 seconds, continue to press and hold the Windows + B keys, but release the power button. You might hear a series of beeps.

      • If the HP BIOS Update screen is not displayed, repeat the previous steps but press the Windows + V keys. If the screen is still not displayed, your computer might not support the feature or there is a hard drive issue.

If all the mentioned steps failed to load the windows, install a BIOS recovery file from the HP website using a USB flash drive.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Sadly none of that works.

It is stuck in a BIOS recovery loop. When I download the latest bios from the HP website F47 (sp134485) extracts to create C:\SWSetup\sp134485\BIOS_Update.exe but that file does not open. I have tried this on five computers now (two of which are from HP) and none of them open it, it crashes straight after asking for admin rights.

F46 Rev A unpacks and then opens perfectly fine. It creates the USB flash drive but the HP laptop states "signature verification failed" when I hold windows+B and turn it on

It appears that there is a problem with the F47 (sp134485) file.

The last thing I can suggest try and restore the OS back to the factory default, which will isolate whether it’s a software or hardware issue.  The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Fixed now. BIOS chip required replacing (difficult soldering) or a whole new motherboard. The retailer fixed it for me because it is a manufacturing defect.

Seems this is not uncommon with HP laptops. If you see "Block 46" in your BIOS update logs then the BIOS chip is, sadly, bricked.
