Hello,
My husband has an HP 17t-cn000 with a 1TB 5400 rpm SATA HDD; it came with Windows 10, but was upgraded to Windows 11. It recently crashed, after numerous attempts to reinstall Windows, I finally got the final message that I am to run the Long DST test, and it got stuck with 1 second left (first photo). It will not boot to USB like it did before. I shut it down after that. From what I have read, it pretty much means the current hard drive is no longer good. I restarted the laptop, and then it showed another message (second photo). If, in fact, this hard drive is dead. Then I want to upgrade it to a 500GB or 1TB SSD. I honestly do not know where to begin to look for one that is compatible with my husband's laptop. I also appreciate some help as to how to actually go about switching my current HDD with a SSD. Thank you so much.

Hi @emmiie,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for sharing the details and the images. Here’s what I see:
- Image 1: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI running a Long DST test on the hard drive. It’s stuck at 99% with 1 second remaining, which usually indicates the drive is failing.
- Image 2: A blue screen showing Hard Disk Error (3F1) and suggesting running diagnostics again. This confirms the HDD is in critical condition.
What This Means
The Long DST test hanging and the 3F1 error strongly indicate that the 1TB 5400 RPM SATA HDD is failing and needs replacement. Reinstalling Windows won’t fix this because the physical disk is damaged.
Compatible SSD Options for HP 17t-cn000
Your laptop supports:
- 2.5-inch SATA SSD (same size as your current HDD)
- M.2 NVMe SSD (if the motherboard has an M.2 slot, most HP 17t-cn000 models do)
How to Replace the HDD with an SSD
- Backup Data (if possible)
- Use an external drive or cloud storage.
- Use an external drive or cloud storage.
- Power Off and Unplug
- Remove the battery if it’s detachable.
- Remove the battery if it’s detachable.
- Open the Bottom Cover
- Use a Phillips screwdriver; carefully pry open the cover.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver; carefully pry open the cover.
- Locate the HDD
- Disconnect the SATA cable and remove the HDD bracket.
- Disconnect the SATA cable and remove the HDD bracket.
- Install SSD
- If using a SATA SSD: mount it in the bracket and reconnect the cable.
- If using NVMe SSD: insert into the M.2 slot at a 30° angle and secure with a screw.
- Reassemble and Boot
- Power on and enter BIOS to confirm SSD detection.
- Power on and enter BIOS to confirm SSD detection.
- Install Windows
- Use a bootable USB with Windows 11 or 10.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello VikramTheGreat,
Thank you, I had a feeling I was going to need to replace it. Now this partially resolves it. Since I do not know much about M.2 NVMe SSD, can you recommend a link or two to purchase one? I would appreciate it very much. 🙂
Kind regards
