HP Laptop hinge broke within warranty period but not covered??

Purchased my laptop from JB Hi-Fi in late 2019. So only been over 1 year. Voluntary warranty is still covered for this laptop. I have never dropped it or misused it or caused any accidental damage. I have many times opened and closed the device. One day I noticed the side part of the screen coming off slightly, then suddenly one day I opened the laptop, heard a crack and that hinge on the right side came off. I believe this is a mechanical issue and should be covered under warranty, but they are requesting me to pay $350 for repair. Can anyone help me with this issue?
