I have HP Pavilion 17-ab086ng (ENERGY STAR) that came with a m.2 SATA SSD and I want to upgrade it with NVME. When I installed it and started to install Windows 10 the laptop kept stuck on the loading screen and wouldn't continue. My question is, does this laptop model support NVME or does a firmware update need to be done?

A NVMe SSD seems to be supported in the 17-ab000 model series.
Read through this discussion, the person indicates you need BIOS F.09 (or newer I assume) for the NVMe SSD to work.

The service manual also states that NVMe SSDs are supported, but it lists newer models in the series (17-ab300 and up).

NVMe SSD's also work in the 17-ab2xx model series as indicated in this discussion:
