HP Pavilion g6-1189sa Notebook PC service manual

I have a HP Pavilion g6-1189sa Notebook PC which i have been upgrading and been getting wrong advice on from experts in the forum. The problem is that the service manual is completely wrong. The motherboard in the laptop is hewlett-packard 1668 P18A0012C0S7TM 08.38. The cpu that came factory installed is an i3 core m370 @2.4GHz. This chip isn't even listed as compatible. I bought a new cpu that was supported in the service manual but was much bigger in size. the actual dimensions of the chips that fit this board is 1.48" x 1.48" and upon further research the board actually supports better chips than listed. It doesn't support any that is listed in the manual. Also they say it can only support 8gb of ram when on researching the coard itself I found out it can take 16gb which is what i am currently running with no problems. I have noticed more than one user correcting HP staff and being told that they are wrong by staff. I think that HP should check out this matter and fix the issue with their service manual costing customers money buying wrong parts and being given wrong advice. Simply referring to a manual instead of checking if the manual is correct through further checking the motherboard information isn't a great service. With more than a few users realizing only to be told they are wrong when in fact they are right is something HP should be addressing.

What processor did you buy?

The service manual covers the entire g6-1xxx model series.

Some g6-1xxx notebooks like yours come with a 1st gen Intel core processor and Mobile Intel Series 5 chipset, and some g6-1xxx notebooks come with a 2nd generation core processor and Mobile Intel Series 6 chipset.

The processors that I see in the manual are 2nd generation processors such as the Intel® Core™ i7-2620M processor, which will not work in your notebook, and 1st generation core processors, which are the only ones that will work in your notebook.

Since your notebook has an Intel 1st generation core processor, it has a Mobile Intel Series 5 chipset, so the best processor you can install in your model according to the manual, would be the Intel Core i5-480M processor.

This is an example of what can happen when someone without much experience in these matters tries to read the Service Manuals and do upgrades. The advice given by @Paul_Tikkanen  was absolutely correct. There are two versions of the i5-480M; there is a 988 pin and a BGA 1288 version. The Manual also does not say that AMD processors will fit on an Intel board. And you cannot put a BGA processor into a socket. BGAs are soldered in place. So not sure what is going on here. @harry378  does not appreciate that the Experts here are not HP employees and all that can be done is pass along what the Manual says. I would like to see a picture of the i5-480M @harry378  tried to install on this motherboard as there is no reason a 988 pin G1 socket version of that processor would not fit in this board.

All I advised you was that the i5-480M was the best processor you could upgrade to, according to the manual.

I did not tell you the shape or size or pin arrangement of that processor, or mention any other processor.

If you had any additional questions, you should have asked.

When I had opined that I didn't think that such an upgrade would make much of a difference, etc., you replied, and I quote...'I'm confident enough with changing components.'

I took that to mean that you knew what you were doing.

There I will admit I made the wrong assumption.

sorry the blame was not meant to be directly put at  you. Im simply wanting to point out that theres an issue with the service manual. i researched the board and true enough it needs looking ay. these things can happen. a misprint of the board can cause the manual to be wrong. it also tuns 16gb ram supported. i have this installed now. i checked the settings through cmd prompt to get exact hardware and serial numbers. i just want to point it out as tis can be foxed by taking a  look at the manual and seeing that at least parts are wrongly printed

I have built pc's and strip and regularly repair laptops, tablets and phones. i'm not a novice. i apologies if it came across that it was an experts fault. I should have really said the compiler of the reference you are given has messed up somewhere

ok thank you. it must be an editing problem. I will do that. It's just that it has ended up costing me money buying a wrong chip that the manual said supported which has made me loose money. the seller i bought it from also referred to the hp manual so i cant hold him responsible. it's just for the future because i actually love hp products. they don't solder everything so its easy upgrade able. i guess i should take part blame for not removing the part and double checking also

Still not understanding how an i5-480M did not fit on that motherboard, but an i5-560M did, to get down to details. And what exactly is wrong with the Manual? You are not likely to get any kind of reaction from HP on something of this vintage. Enough issues trying to keep current documentation accurate.
