HP Spectre x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello all,

Two days ago my 2015 HP Spectre x360 suddenly would not charge, overheated, and powered down without any sign of life. The motherboard burned and actually smoked up, causing a fire hazard in my bedroom. Note there was no ventilation issues and no sign of any issue at all prior to the incident.

Upon inspection, it appears that the voltage regulators (?) on the motherboard are burnt, and it's possible the SSD is damaged. This appears to be a very common issue given the amount of posts with the exact same problem on this forum.

My questions are:

  • How can I go about contacting HP/CSPC about this issue? It seems to be very dangerous and recurring with the same model, and is clearly some hardware defect. The warranty is no longer in effect.
  • What's my best chance at recovering any data from the SSD? Do I just get a M.2 SSD to USB adapter? Would the SSD be encrypted?

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
