HP Spectre x360 Convertible
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just bought an HP Spectre x360, the left speakers are much quieter than the right. I tried the windows test too, where it plays sound on the left then the right to make sure. The difference is a lot and discernible from far.

I have checked the balance tool (Speaker/Headphone properties>Levels>balance), it is same on both sides.

My headphones work fine, its the built-in speakers that have an issue.

After doing updates (BIOS etc) from the HP Support Assistant, the problem went away for a week. Now its back...

Help! I wanna enjoy the B&O speakers...

@Ray911 Welcome to HP Community!

Let’s first try to run the HP guided solutions which will help you to fix the issue on most scenarios. Follow the steps here: http://hp.care/2dp5pwy

If the issue persists, try the below-mentioned solutions:

Solution 1:

  • Right-click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'.
  • Left click the default device once to highlight it ( it's usually 'speakers & headphones' ) then click the Properties button.
  • Click the Enhancements tab and put a tick in the box next to 'Loudness Equalization'.
  • Click Apply to save the change and then click OK in all remaining windows and see if this has helped at all.

Solution 2:

  • Right-click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'.
  • Select the Communications tab up the top.
  • By default ‘when windows detects communications activity’ is set to ‘Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%’.
  • Change this to ‘Do nothing’.
  • Press OK.

Hey Decipher,

Thanks for your reply.

Tried both the solutions, didn't help. The troubleshooter also suggested turning off enhancements, the issue is I don't have an enhancements tab which the troubleshoot did mention ("If you don't see an enhancements tab then your device doesn't have any enhancements.").

Any other tricks? Could this be a BIOS issue as after BIOS update it was fine for a while...

@Ray911 I suggest we run a hardware test to be on a safer side, I've listed below the steps to get started on the tests,

meanwhile, please look for the complete model name of your device and include it in your response along with the results of the test:

Install the latest version of the HP Hardware diagnostics (UEFI) on your device using this link: Click here for details

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  • Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  • On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
  • Click Extensive Test.
  • Click Run once, or Loop until error.
  • While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component display on the screen.

If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you respond back to us.

If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.
