We use them at school and have a cart full of them and many of these laptops have the same problem, a swelling keyboard section. They still work but for how much longer...

Its the battery swelling I am afraid. It's not as much a danger as assumed except to the laptop and requires replacement of the battery. I would not spend the money to do it on this model of laptop as @erico  says. If under warranty HP would replace the batteries free of charge but I assume these are past warranty.
