Solved!

Hard drive 1 smart check failed - want to upgrade from hdd to ssd

HP Pavilion x360 Convertible
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I have HP pavilion model: 13-u133tu with HDD. where I am getting notification that hard disc failure is imminent.

So need expert advice to fix this issue.

As per my understanding HDD needs to be replaced, if it is correct then want to know whether I can replace it with "128-GB, M2, SATA, DRAM-less solid-state drive" (with additional adapter/spare-part if required) or I can use 2.5 Inch SSD as well.

FYI I want to use "Samsung 860 EVO 2.5 Inch SSD 500GB".

if it is possible then please help me to know technical specs (i.e. process or additional information) to change this HDD drive to SSD (M2 Sata or 2.5 Inch SSD whichever is supported).

Also help to know the process to migrate OS from old drive to new one as well...

Thanks in advance...

I don't know why you have to do 2 steps, pay more money to get the SAME thing. You can directly use 2.5" SSD and there are many of them on market now.  You can use  2.5" 1TB or 2TB SSD from Crucial MX500/MX500 or Samsung 860EVO and from many other vendors.

The HDD is dying (or died) now.   Since your machine previously ran Windows 10, you can do a clean install W10 for free by using the media creation tool at the link below.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

The tool will allow you to make a bootable installation media (USB/DVD) and you can use installation media to install.

During the installation process if you are asked to enter a product key, check the 'Skip' box and W10 will install and then automatically activate once you are connected to the internet using the key embedded in BIOS of your machine.

Then you can install the drivers and available software you need from your PC's support page. Normally few Windows 10 updates can install nearly all drivers for you.

You can also use the following tool

Hard drive 1 smart check failed - want to upgrade from hdd to ssd

Hi

Than you for quick update and solution.

Will go through it...

My concern was that HP service manual and docs (of this machine) were saying only about m2 sata, that's the reason asked about it ...

Now it is clear that I can use 1 tb or 2 tb ssd from many vendors as suggested in your update...

Have a nice week...

@rathonit

Its specs

   https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c05333535

It has   1 TB 5400 rpm SATA which is a 2.5" HDD. You can simply replace it as mentioned above. It MAY HAVE M.2 SATA slot. The reason I say "may have" because Crucial does not supply compatible M.2 SATA drive for it

        https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP---Compaq/pavilion-x360-13-u133tu

Please fix the 2.5" HDD first, when opening your machine, you will know it has M.2 slot or not.

Regards.
