HP Pavilion Notebook - 17-g118
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

After a windows 10 update, the computer got stuck in an auto repair loop. I entered HP diagnostics and ran system tests I got the following errors on the quick check:

Hard Drive Short DST check Failed

FAILURE ID: 0USFPS-83J8KA-MFPWMA-60RG03

PRODUCT ID: P5P51EA#ABF

I'm assuming (from other posts) that this means the hard drive has a problem and it needs to be replaced. I have already backed up the drive but is there any way to get the  HP Pavilion Notebook - 17-g118 restore disks because the owner didn't buid them when they first got the machine.

Thanks in advance.

Yes the hard drive needs replaced. It is a coincidence it happened after an update. Windows 10 can be downloaded from Microsoft Media Creation Tool site and will just reinstall and activate. Files can likely still be transferred off the old drive with an external usb adapter.

This is the original software that was installed on your computer, with all the extra HP software.

Using the tool to upgrade this PC to Windows 10 (click to show more or less information)

Here’s when to use these instructions:

  • You have a licence to install Windows 10  and are upgrading this PC from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
  • You need to reinstall Windows 10 on a PC you’ve already successfully activated Windows 10.

So, you get to choose between Windows 8 and Windows 10.
