Time to give credit where credit is due:  HP wound up replacing the machine under warranty.  The ongoing repair delays are due to a lack of parts.  The customer rep i dealt with handled the issue very professionally and efficiently.

First off let me say I'm glad to hear your laptop has been fixed John. As for you Thomas thank you for the well wishes - I was able to get help through my credit card company. I am making this post from my new laptop.
