So finally got around to trying the options.

- Also looked at the following support post  - https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/NVMe-SSD-not-showing-up-in-BIOS/td-p/7699038

 

Here is what I tried.

Removed the SATA HDD

Tried to see if system boots from the m2.SSD

Result: FAILED - System did not boot, gave a message at bootup saying that a boot device could not be found

 

Restarted, pressed F10, and went to boot options. 

 Here, under UEFI Boot Order -->OS Boot Manager , it shows up my SATA HDD entry (only 1 option, although I have physically removed the HDD) and does not display any other option.

 

Not sure what else to try

I think there is a problem with the cloned drive.

 

I don't think the notebook likes the SATA boot info that carried over to the NVMe SSD because they don't use the same drive controller.

 

The only suggestion I can offer would be to make a bootable USB recovery drive with the cloud recovery tool that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook on the NVMe SSD.

 

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.  You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive to create the recovery media with.

After you make the recovery media, disconnect the hard drive again boot from the recovery media and see if this gets the notebook to boot from the SSD after the recovery has been completed.

 

You will have to reinstall your programs and files but that is better than where you are at now.

That sounds like a good approach, so if I understand correctly the steps are

  1. - Reconnect my HDD
  2. - Create a USB recovery disk
  3. - Disconnect the HDD
  4. - Reboot using the USB recovery disk
    • --->assuming that during this process, it will ask where to install the OS, and I should have the m2.SSD listed that I can select.
    • --- Wondering if I have to format that drive after step 2 or it should be fine

Perfect.

 

Since you will only have the one drive installed, it may not ask you which drive you want to recover.

 

You won't need to format the M.2 drive.

 

The cloud recovery media will do all of the work.

 

Once you confirm that the M.2 SSD is working fine, you should format the 2.5" drive to remove everything from it and use it for storage only.

Once again, a "BIG" Thank you. Followed the steps exactly as you recommended, and I now have the laptop working with good speed and definitely usable now. 

- Upgraded to use the m2.SSD 

- Upgraded RAM to 16GB

 

and to get all of this working perfectly

  1. - Created a USB recovery disk (used HP Cloud Recovery Tool)
    • Very easy to use, excellent experience
  2. - Disconnected the SATA HDD
  3. - Rebooted using the USB recovery disk
    • The system booted into the Recovery Tool without any additional configurations, and
      • Formatted the SSD and
      • installed the OS on the SSD
