Common problems for Battery

Hi

I have just put a new battery into my laptop (all reviews said the battery was ok). I bought it because I was getting the 601 primary battery error on the old one. The battery icon in the bottom right of screen said zero and only worked when plugged in.

New battery is in and it says 100% charged on the icon. But it still won't run without being plugged in.

I'm still getting 601 error but also getting a CMOS 502 error. I have spent hours this evening trying ideas from the Internet without success. I pressed F2 and it says battery not connected.

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Hi @Deddi100,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding battery issues on the HP 14 laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Battery Calibration:

  • Sometimes a new battery needs to be calibrated. To do this, fully charge the battery and then disconnect the AC power.
  • Allow the laptop to run on battery until it's completely drained and shuts down. Then recharge it to 100%. This can help in recalibrating the battery sensor.

Check Battery and Power Settings:

  • Ensure that the battery is correctly seated in its compartment.
  • Verify the power settings in Windows to confirm that they are optimized for battery use rather than performance.

Update BIOS:

  • Check for any available BIOS updates from the HP Support website for your laptop model. A BIOS update can sometimes resolve battery and CMOS-related errors.
  • Follow the instructions on the HP Support page to safely update your BIOS.

CMOS Battery Replacement:

  • The CMOS error (502) suggests that the CMOS battery, which maintains BIOS settings, may need to be replaced.
  • You may need to seek assistance from a professional to replace the CMOS battery, as it can involve disassembly of the laptop.

Perform Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the laptop and unplug the AC power adapter.
  • Remove the battery and press the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reinsert the battery, reconnect the power adapter, and power on the laptop.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Deddi100,

Thank you for letting me know, I really appreciate you trying all the initial steps so thoroughly. Since the issue is still there (the new battery shows 100%, but the laptop won’t run without AC power, and you still see the 601 and CMOS 502 errors), let’s dig a bit deeper.

Here are the next steps you should try:

Double-check the battery connection.

Power off the laptop.

Unplug the AC adapter.

Remove the new battery and carefully inspect the metal contacts on both the battery and the laptop’s battery bay.

Look for:

Bent or missing pins.

Dust or corrosion.

Gently clean the contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth or soft brush, do not use any liquid.

Reinsert the battery firmly and evenly to ensure it’s fully seated.

Inspect the Battery Model Compatibility

Make sure the new battery is truly compatible by part number, some third-party replacements can trigger false errors or may not communicate correctly with the system.

If possible, test with another battery that is known to work (borrow one or test at a service shop).

Clear RTC (Real-Time Clock)

The CMOS 502 means the RTC battery (the small coin cell inside the laptop) might be weak or disconnected.

For some HP 14 models:

Turn off the laptop.

Unplug AC power.

Remove the main battery.

Press and hold the power button for 60 seconds.

Reinsert the battery, plug in AC power, and try powering on.

If the CMOS battery is removable:

Remove it carefully, wait 5–10 minutes, then reinstall it.

If you have a replacement CR2032 coin cell, swap it.

Load BIOS Defaults

Power on the laptop and tap Esc, then F10 to enter BIOS.

Find the option Load Setup Defaults or Restore Defaults (often under the Exit tab).

Save changes and exit.

This can clear corrupted BIOS battery status flags.

Test with Battery Only

Disconnect AC power with the battery installed.

Press the power button for 10 seconds, and watch for any flicker of lights or fan spin.

If the laptop shows any sign of life, it means the battery is partly powering it, it might be a detection issue rather than a full power fault.

I hope this helps.
