Hi @Dylan108
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with two issues: rapid battery drain and a bump or swelling near the battery area. Let’s address both issues step by step to prevent any further damage to your HP 15s laptop.
1. Battery Drain Issue
Battery drain issues can be caused by several factors, including software settings, hardware issues, or battery degradation. Here are some troubleshooting steps to try:
a. Check Battery Health
Over time, laptop batteries degrade, especially after 3 years of usage, and this could be why it's draining faster than before. You can check the battery's health to see if it's the cause of the problem.
- Windows Battery Report:
- Press Windows + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Type the command: powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
- This will generate a report that shows the battery’s health, cycle count, and other useful details. The report will be saved as an HTML file in your user folder (e.g., C:\Users\<YourName>).
- Open the report in a browser and look for the "Design Capacity" and "Full Charge Capacity" values. If the Full Charge Capacity is significantly lower than the Design Capacity, your battery has likely degraded.
b. Check for Power-Hungry Apps
Sometimes, certain apps can drain your battery unnecessarily.
- Open Task Manager (press Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and go to the Processes tab.
- Look for any apps or processes that are consuming a lot of CPU or memory. Apps like browsers with too many open tabs or background apps might be draining your battery.
- Close any unnecessary apps to improve battery performance.
c. Adjust Power Settings
You can tweak power settings to help your laptop conserve battery:
- Right-click the battery icon in the taskbar and select Power Options.
- Choose the Balanced or Power Saver plan.
- If you’re using High Performance, switch to Balanced as it uses less power.
- Click Change plan settings and make sure the laptop sleeps after a short period when not in use.
d. Disable Background Apps
To save battery, disable apps that run in the background when you’re not using them.
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Background apps.
- Turn off apps that you don’t need running in the background.
e. Update Your Drivers
Outdated drivers can sometimes cause power issues. Make sure your battery and power management drivers are up-to-date.
- Open Device Manager (press Windows + X and select Device Manager).
- Expand the Batteries section, right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and select Update Driver.
- Also, check for Chipset Drivers under the System Devices section, as they affect power management.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
