HP Envy 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cw0000 (761Y9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

HP Envy, 17.3 inch Laptop.  32gb memory.  Processor, 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1355U 1.70 GHz,  I constantly get the message, "Not Responding".  HP once told me that it is because of the applications I have on the laptop.  Well, I have two older, and I mean older, that have a lot more applications and a lot less memory and I don't get the "Not Responding", message.  The "Not Responding" message happens when I want to open an application or save a change I made in a document.  Even when I make a minor change such as correct a misspelled word or a number in an Excel file.  Each time I have to wait from 15 to 30 seconds and this can happens hundreds of times per day.  Another issue is the battery drains overnight by as much as 90%.  The laptop is off, why will the battery drain?

I suggest that you run the Disk Cleanup app.

You may have way too many temp files that should be deleted.

How full is your storage device (SSD or HDD)? If it is has less than 10% of full capacity available, that is the problem.

Use the Task Manager to see what is eating up your processor cycles leading to the delayed reaction.  " 'Ctrl+Shift+Esc' to invoke the Windows Task Manager. Under the 'Processes' tab, you can see which apps are not responding and terminate them"

With 32GB memory installed, you shouldn't see more than 48% of the memory in use and that only if there are many processes active.

" Another issue is the battery drains overnight by as much as 90%. "

You should run the Windows Battery-Report to get a clear picture of the state of your laptop's battery compared to when it was new. I would suspect that you need to replace the battery if it already has had a few years in use.

How to invoke and use Windows Battery Report

The Battery Report is a utility built into Windows OS that will provide an accurate picture of the remaining life your laptop battery has.

[InsertBatteryLife1png

To invoke the report, hold down the Windows key and tap the X key once. Click on Terminal(Admin) to open a command terminal window. In the windows, type in powercfg /batteryreport and press the enter key.

Now open the Windows Explorer and type Battery-report.html in the search box at the upper right and press enter. The location of your Battery-report file will appear as in the image below. Double click the file and select a browser of your choice as the app to open the file. Now you will see the report. You can print it if you like, or copy the text and post it in a reply in a thread you may have authored about your battery issue.

Your original laptop battery will also show the serial number and number of charge/discharge cycles in the Cycle Count. Mine is a replacement, so it does not.

[Insert BatteryLifeComparison]

The following information is from online industry sources
The life of a laptop battery is approximately between 300-500 cycles." Under normal usage conditions and in ambient temperatures (25°C), the Li-ion battery is expected to charge and discharge normally for 300 cycles (or about one year)." That is the reason that the industry wide warranty for a laptop battery is one year. The average laptop battery can last between 2-5 years or between 300-500 cycles. That depends on the type of use, the power management setting and how often the laptop is used. The Battery Care option present in most HP laptop BIOS is recommended to be set at 80%. That will extend the service life of the battery/

As your battery ages, the Full Charge Capacity will be less than the Design capacity.

When Full Charge Capacity is 70% or less than the Design capacity you will begin to notice that you will have reduced mobile, or stand alone use of the laptop without the power adapter connected.

At a certain point, usually between 30-50% of the Design capacity, The battery reaches a bit of a tipping point in its product life cycle.

You will find that at lower full charge capacity, the battery drains quickly. It may even surprise you and shut down the laptop.

That is at the point of your laptop's battery life cycle where it should be replaced with a new one.

You can, if you have the confidence and are willing to accept the risk, change the battery yourself. If you do not have the confidence and are not willing to risk damaging you laptop, it would be best to have the battery changed by a laptop service engineer in a PC or laptop shop
