Whats the smart way to install drivers on a new HD?

If it were mine, and I was only concerned about drivers, not the OS, then I would do the following:

1) read this thread about saving off the existing drivers -- and write them to a USB stick: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/68426-backup-restore-device-drivers-windows-10-a.html

2) connect the new primary drive -- I'm presuming it already has Windows on it because you did not mention that

3) insert the USB stick with the HP drivers and restore them.

WAWood,

This is a very cool procedure.  I have successfully backed up the drivers.

My concern is that when I go to reinstall them I am going to have to know which file goes to what hardware.

I scanned the reinstall doc, so I saw the procedure. I wish there was a way to automatically reinstall.  Do you know of such magic?

No, I don't -- but you are replacing the drive in the same PC, then the same drivers would apply as those BEFORE you replaced the drive.  If you are talking about using the drive in a new PC, then there is no point in saving off the old drivers.
