HP Probook 440 G1 (#F2P45UT#ABA)
Linux

Currently My Probook only has 2.4 GIGHZ WLAN (wifi) part # 690019-001, Atheros AR9565 802.11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 combination adapter

I wish to upgrade this Network card  to something like 'Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 Wi-fi Card for Notebooks with the HMC (Half Mini PCI-E Card) Form Factor'.  from Intel:

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/product-briefs/dual-band-wireless-ac-72...

While I know I only have one antenna and the Intel 7260 is not listed in the 'HP ProBook 440 G1 Notebook PC - Spare Parts' list or the HP PartSurfer it seems my only other limit would be a "BIOS whitelist. Since my product is no longer under warranty I have the skill and no reservation about opening up the laptop and adding the antenna.

I have been into the BIOS and I cannot figure if I have a whitelist, is seems not to be in any selection, as I only have WIFI enable available. Can't find anything for adapter preferences? The original BIOS was version (L74) 01.41 but has been updated to 01.45 with a BIOS date of 2018, The date I believe might be the year I did the update.

Other the a possible outdated HP list for the ProBook 440 G1, is there a way to figure out if I have a whitelist? beyond Purchase and trial with boot messages?

Possible candidates are: -710662-005, -756753-001, 710661-001

https://www.newegg.com/intel-7260-mini-pcie/p/N82E16833106240, or https://www.newegg.com/intel-7260-mini-pcie/p/N82E16833106240, seem to be the same

https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OEM-HP-756753-001-Intel-Dual-Wireless-AC-7260-7260HMW-Bluetooth-PCIe-Ha...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-7260HMW-Dual-band-wireless-AC-7260-867Mbps-802-11ac-Wifi-BT-4-0-PCI-E...

Any guidance would be great -James

You're very welcome.

HP does not publish whitelist info.

The only way we know if a PC has a whitelist is if someone installs a wifi card, and they get the BIOS halt on boot error.

As a general rule of thumb, all HP notebooks with an Intel series 6 or older chipset, have BIOS whitelists.

Some Intel series 7 notebooks have whitelists, and most if not all, Intel Series 8 chipsets such as yours, do not have BIOS whitelists.

Then a select few with 5th gen core processors have BIOS whitelists but only on a certain consumer notebook model series.

You can get the wifi card part number I suggested for less on eBay if you are willing to wait for it to be sent from China.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=710661-001+&_sacat=0&_sop=15

I was in no rush to upgrade my HP 350 G1, so I ordered the card from China, and it took about two weeks to get to St. Louis.

Hi, James:

Have you opened up the notebook to confirm there is only one antenna connected to the Atheros AR9565 wifi adapter?

There should be two with that modei wifi card.

If there is only one, then the Bluetooth won't work in the Intel 7260 wifi card, unless you add the second antenna cable.

You would attach the single antenna cable to the 7260's main or #1 antenna terminal.

I recommend this part number... 710661-001.  There should be no whitelist.

Yes the Laptop has been open when I upgraded the memory and considered a fingerprint scanner. I also did a deep cleaning and inspection. I have been building my own PC's since 1984 when I got my first manufactured PC an was much disappointed. Since I already had my degree in electronics and at that time Was in Silicon Vally this seemed the way to go. It was far to easy living there to get parts. I find the support with Documents from HP great for my type of personality and has made me a fan of HP. I still have my reverse polish notation calculator from HP (Just a curiosity). Perhaps I will try the HP 710661-001 ($23) and since I can get the "Intel Network 7260.HMWWB.R Wi-Fi WIRELESS-AC 7260 H/T 2X2 AC 867 Mbps + Bluetooth HMC Dual Band Brown Box" for $17.63 from newegg (Item#: 9SIA4RE5N32027) I'll get both since I still don't know whether I need to worry about a whitelist?

Thanks For the fast reply -James

Hello

Great Answer! My Ubuntu OS defines the PCI Bridge and others as Intel 8 Series chipset family. For others google command line for terminal in Linux

$lspci

So now I feel I have no whitelist to worry about

I managed to nail an open box card in Ohio for $19.95 When your link brought up eBay.  So now I just need to workout the antenna and I found, https://www.newegg.com/p/2VT-006A-00023?Item=9SIABP553Z7940 and https://www.newegg.com/p/2VT-006A-00030?Item=9SIABP57H35561 that seem to be a generic to the HP #721507-001.

I also found a '828395-001 SPS-LCD BACK COVER FOR WWAN w/ANTENNA, seems to be for the 'Model: ProBook 450 G3' for $21. Do you think it might fit the ProBook 440 G1 ?

Thanks -James

Hi, James:

I'm not sure about the antenna system from the 450 G3 working in the 440 G1 because...aren't the terminals that snap on to the wifi adapter smaller on the M.2 form factor wifi cards than they are on the HMC form factor wifi cards?

The only other minor issue if the connector ends are the same size, would be the antenna cable from the 450 G3 may be a bit longer since the display is bigger.

Unfortunately, the HP parts store has the specific antenna kit part you need on back order, and it costs $22.64 for the kit.

This seller has the kit with that part number...

I post this to help anyone with Ubuntu (14.04) and Windows 7 dual boot.

This is NOT a step by step but more of HOW I Got There and figured it out.

I never could get the Intel Dual band 7260 WiFi card drivers (/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode) to work any better then the old 2.4 gig Hz single band card. It seemed perhaps It was still single band only.

I changed to A BroadComm BCM94352HMB (AKA AZUREWAVE AW-CE123H) and Ubuntu picked up and auto installed the Correct Drivers in the System >> Updates & software >> additional Drivers TAB

Now I have 866 M/bits per second screaming downloads!!!

I had to do a little hack for the Bluetooth as Ubuntu did not pickup BCM20702A1 drivers for the Bluetooth (in Win7 it showed up as a (splat/exclamation icon) Unknown device "20702A1".

To get the bluetooth to work fallowed this link Broadcom Bluetooth firmware for Linux kernel and I got an understanding what I needed. The shortcut is to find your Vendor ID and Device code ID and search "google.com" for either a hex file or a hex file already converted to an 'BCM.hcd' file and put it in /lib/firmware/brcm/

For my setup it was "/lib/firmware/brcm/BCM.hcd"  downloaded as BCM20702A1-0a5c-21fb.hcd, where some one had already done the conversion to .hcd file, so It was a search in Google once I knew I was looking for a Vendor and Product ID number.

In widows you will need to know how to find this in the "device manager", that will look like "VID_0A5C&PID_21FB" and Linux, and for me it worked out like "0a5c:21fb" that breaks down to "Vendor=0a5c ProdID=21fb" or "0a5c-21fb", Discovering this number is much faster with the command line

lspci -knn | grep Net -A3; lsusb

 This gave me

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4352 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:43b1] (rev 03)
	Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:2154]

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

The second to the last line is the Broadcom  new card and the magic number was "0a5c:21fb" and on the same site I found the needed file already done RAW file at the same site, Link: BCM20702A1-0a5c-21fb.hcd RAW file, renamed it "BCM.hcd" for My Ubuntu 14.04 version, later versions might use use "BCM20702A1-0a5c-21fb.hcd" and pasted it in "/lib/firmware/brcm/" and reboot and done....bluetooth now worked great.

This is NOT a step by step but more of HOW I Got There and figured it out. I did not really need nor did I install the "github.com" Program and run it, but Just Named the downloaded RAW file and put it in the right folder/place... BOOM reboot and done!

I have left out many steps I took figuring this out as this Post would be inordinately long and it found it hard expressing this any shorter...But if I did not befuddle you perhaps your on your way? It took me hours of searching and some trial before I knew what I wanted to do!

In the end I am still not liking the slow to load and slow to work windows, so I did not bother there as I only keep the windows dual boot for ONE APP anyway I use on my F150's trucks computer's OBDII port to read the service codes.

Also win7 will not support BLE or Bluetooth Low energy
