Yes HP legally should not deny warranty coverage just because the laptop has been opened. But we know they sometimes do. I personally am a "fixer" (google "fixer movement") and I advocate the end user's right to upgrade, and repair his or her own property. However, use your common sense. There is a difference between upgrading which HP will not do for you, and trying to poke under the hood just to confirm an obvious problem. If you are under warranty and the laptop is exhibiting obvious signs of a specific problem like a fan issue, send it in and let HP make the diagnosis. What if you figure out by openinng it the fan is bad? Are you going to pay for a new one? No you want HP to fix it free. Send it in.

Hi,
The fan has a problem and most likely needs to be replaced. You can run HP support assistant on the PC and go to tab support to see the support options or contact HP on web:
http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html
This will then be fixed under warranty.
If you do decide to take a look yourself you can see the steps on page 46 of service manual.

Hope it helps,
David

Any time a laptop Manual has this warning at the top- do not open it. You will likely void the warranty.
IMPORTANT! This document is intended for
HP authorized service providers only.

Not in all Manuals. I try to mention it on any thread where a member tells another to jump on in with a brand new machine under warranty . Most occasions I leave it to the OP to make their own decision.
Btw, on some models it does have that heading but still offers a couple of "Customer Replaceable parts".

"Jump right in" seems a weird way to put it if you read my post. In any event if the user wanted to upgrade RAM it is OK, however taking a look at the fan not? I believe you should always advise the same thing in the threads you are following.

David

Actually my first reply was in answer to the OP's other question asking if he would void his warranty by opening the laptop.
Not to contradict anything you told him-just answering his other question with my opinion. As for upgrading memory, I never tell a poster to do it. I usually answer the question of how much can be added and offer the Manual where they can read and make their decision.

No, Cheryl is incorrect. Opining your laptop will NOT void your warrenty. Regardless of what the manual says.
It would be illegal for HP to not serivice your laptop just because a warrenty void sticker is damaged. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects you as the end user.

I believe the key sentence in Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act- "Unless warrantors provide the parts or services for free".
I do not speak for HP or it's legal dept. Most longtime members tend to err on the side of caution. Some may even say-as long as you don't break anything when opening you "should" be ok.
