Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought this laptop less than a year ago and am having some issues with the battery.

I first noticed the laptop would not charge past 99% for a couple of days. Then, while using the laptop on battery it randomly went into hibernate as it usually does when it hits 10% only it never gave me a low battery warning and I'm fairly sure the battery didn't indicate a low charge in the first place. One of the times this happened I plugged it in to charge and within 20 minutes it had gone from a 2% charge to 99%. I unplugged it and used it on battery but after 2 hours of continuous use the battery had not dropped from 99%.

The most recent time this happened I had just turned my laptop on from sleeping overnight. I checked the charge and it was at 47% but I only managed to use the laptop for five minutes before it shut off, upon plugging it in and turning it back on and the battery indicated a 0% charge. With only 35 minutes of charging it had gone up to 99%.

I don't know if my laptop just isn't reading the charge on the battery right or if there's something wrong with the battery itself but any help would be appreciated!

Hi @LR_15

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

To better assist you - May I have the exact model name of the product? Refer to this document for steps to find the product details. Do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc.

While you respond to that, try these steps -

Step 1 Hard Reset -

1. Shutdown the computer.
2. Unplug all the Adapter and peripherals connected.
3. Remove the Battery. (This step might not be applicable if you computer has an in-built battery).
4. Press and hold down the power button for 15 to 20 seconds.
5. Plug-in the Adapter and put the Battery back into the computer.
6. Try to turn on the computer.

Step 2 BIOS Defaults -

1. Shutdown the computer.
2. Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3. Press F10 once for BIOS.
4. Press F9 for BIOS defaults.
5. Press F10 to save and exit.

Step 3 Update the BIOS -

Refer to this document for steps - HP Consumer Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System)

Step 4 Test the Battery and AC Adapter -

1. Shutdown the computer.
2. Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3. Press F2 once.
4. Go to Component test.
5. From the list, run the Battery and AC Adapter test.

If the issue still persists, try re-installing the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery -

1. In the search box, type and open “Device Manager”.
2. Expand “Batteries”.
3. Right click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.
4. Click on “Uninstall”.
5. At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driver
6. Shutdown the computer.
7. Remove the battery for minute and then put it back in.
8. When the computer comes back up it should automatically find the driver.
9. Go to Device Manager.
10. Expand Batteries.
11. Right click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.
12. Click "Search automatically for updated driver software". Repeat the same steps for Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
