Congratulations @Magnusen, at last you could upgrade your laptop with SSD. I have one question, why you couldn't upgrade with 1GB 2.5inch 860 EVO SATA III SSD?

Although we can understand from service manual 512GB is written as maximum capacity but it is for M.2 SSD and not for 2.5inch SSD.

If 850 EVO M.2 SATA III SSD with MLC could not work (as per you initial post), then how come 2.5inch 860 EVO with MLC worked on your laptop?

The 2.5 inch SATA port is never disabled as it is needed for either an SSD or a hard drive. Its the M.2 ports that have the problems. And the most likely explanation although this has never been confirmed officially, is that some units sold at Costco and also possibly Walmart and maybe a few other high volume outlets, are built with M.2 ports disabled by design. I think the prior user who posted just did not buy a 1 TB 2.5 inch SSD but if a 500 gig works, then a 1 or 2 TB would work as well.

@Huffer

That means had this user purchased 1GB 2.5inch 860 EVO SATA III SSD, it would have worked? Right?

But my question was related to the MLC. We know his M.2 port is locked and it will neither detect MLC nor TLC SSD. Let's assume it is in unlocked stage, then can we conclude that as 2.5inch MLC has worked in 2.5inch SATA port, the M.2 MLC SATA SSD (860 EVO) would have worked as well? Or it still requires only TLC SSD in M.2 port?

HP Recommended

You can make no conclusions about the capability of the M.2 port based on what does or does not work in the 2.5 inch port. Although both ultimately connect to the SATA bus they are not the same thing. And in any event nothing works in the M.2 port if its disabled.
