Recently my boyfriend and I did a full wipe and reinstall on is old laptop -- removing literally everything from the hard driver and reinstalling Windows XP Home Edition as its OS (we had it on Linux for a while). However, aside from refusing to connect to the Internet, when I went to check there were a few drivers still missing once the OS was installed.
Mass Storage Controller
SM Bus Controller
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
Here's everything on the white sticker on the bottom -- since I have no idea what you might or might not need:
Product: HP Pavillion dv8000
S/N: [Personal Information Removed]
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Here is the support and driver page for your notebook. You should be able to find the drivers you need there:
Install the chipset driver first and reboot.
Then install the graphics driver, reboot
Then install the audio driver (if you have no sound), reboot:
Mass storage controller is your card reader driver.
You are missing both your wired and wireless network card drivers
I don't see a driver for the wired network card and you have a few wireless cards to choose from, so do this and I will try and find these drivers:
You have to have XP SP2 or SP3 for this: Click on each missing device in the device manager. Then click on the details tab. Post the top string of characters you see. Those will ID the model devices you have installed. Then I can send you the links to the drivers.

Not sure if anyone can help but I have the same problem ... trying to recover from a full re-install of WinXP SP2 on a HP Pavilion dv8000 circa 2005. I seem to be missing drivers for modems and and cannect get it to connect to the net. If got the System Properties - Device Manager - I have a bunch of yellow question marks under "Other Devices" to include:
- Ethernet Controller
- HP Integrated Module
- Mass Storage Controller
- Network Controller
- PCI Device
- SM Bus Controller
- Unknown Device
- Video Controller (VGA Compatible).
It appears I don't have sound either ... Trying to go to the HP Support website at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-46818-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...
to download drivers.
I am unsure exactly which ones to download. The original "thread" indicated that if one was to post the info from the details tab of each of the list above - someone could tell me what driver to download.
Obviously - I'm not an expert but sure would appreciate some help. I thought the re-install of WinXP HP would resolve these issues. (My recovery partition is empty - not sure why?).
Thanks in advance.

I can give you the links to some of what you need to install and then you will have to post the hardware ID's for the rest:
Mass storage controller:
HP Integrated module:
You will have to post the hardware ID's for the others by clicking on the remaining devices with yellow ? marks and then click on the Details tab.
Please post the string of characters you see there for each device.
You may or will have remaining:
SM Bus Controller

Hi and thanks ... BUT ... (sorry) ... the video driver you refer me to is for an ATI card and my machine - plain dv8000 has a NVIDIA Go 7600 sticker on the the front ... Should I download and install the ATI Radeon file? I appreciate the help ... I am disappointed that I can't go to "my machine" and download - even buy - the complete set of files I need .. I know its a long time ago .. but thanks for working on a Sunday.
Let me know.
(Maybe I should provide "strings" for all the items?)

There are many different dv8000 models. Some have ATI hardware and some have Intel hardware.
I was able to track down the model with the hardware you probably have.
Below is the link to the chipset driver you need which will install the SM Bus Controller.
Below is the link to the video driver you need.
I will need the hardware ID's for anything that remains with the yellow ? marks.
