the sound is misbehaving and diagnostics says no microphone exists. I have tried all options to include reset pc drivers etc and also have been online to MS and Best buy. A usb and bluetooth microphone along with headphones with jack does not show microphone in diagnostics.. The Tecs are all stumped. T his Laptop is1yr old ( of course out of warrantee) has the sound board built into the motherboard( questionable design flaw. I have looked on web to try and find motherboard N36245 -601 The first and last 6 is hard to determine if a 5 or 8. I do not want this to become a boat anchor but although it works great I need the microphone.
What to do and how do i go about finding or replacing the motherboard. Can I just use a board from another 17 inch .with a I9 processor or what....There appear to be similar motherboards on ebay but not quite the same with different numbers so any old one may not work..

Thank you for the great set of tasks to try. Regretfully I have tried them all but one to no effect. The missing task is the microphone enabling in the bios. The system is a 13th gen intel that was sold as a gaming laptop. the BIOS has no where that mentions a microphone. I did however updated the bios reset the pc without success to my problem ( I reformatted the disk before reset so that I knew it was a clean OS loaded). Regretfully it appears to have no solution save replacing the motherboard which I am reluctant to do as the high cost without a guaranteed fix is daunting. Best Buy who are the repair facility in Maine for HP were no help. They did not quote me for a new MB but gave me a range and indicated they would send it back to the same repair facility ( two weeks) that had said there was no problem from their diagnostics ( go figure). When I ran the diags there was no mention of any part failing to repair but it did say there was no microphone. Very frustrating!!!😾

Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
- Uninstall audio drivers in Device Manager, restart, and let Windows reinstall them. Or download the latest drivers from HP's website.
- In Settings > System > Sound, ensure the correct microphone is selected.
- Check BIOS: Restart and enter BIOS (press F10 or ESC) to ensure the microphone is enabled.
- Plug in a USB microphone or headphones with a mic and check if they show up in Sound settings.
- Motherboard Issue: If diagnostics say no microphone, the motherboard might be faulty.
- Alternative Solutions: Use an external USB sound card or Bluetooth headset as a temporary fix.
We can help you get the replacement motherboard, but please note that there will be a cost involved. Let us know if you'd like to proceed, and we can discuss further details.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Hi @TerraImage,
I can really feel your frustration 😞.
I know how it is when you’ve tried everything you can think of and nothing seems to work. It’s especially tough when the BIOS doesn’t even mention the microphone and the diagnostics don’t point to any clear problems. It must feel like you’re running in circles, and I get how annoying that can be 😤.
The fact that the BIOS doesn’t seem to have an option for the microphone, combined with the diagnostics showing no issues, does make it seem like the problem could be hardware related. Even though you’ve done all the right steps - updating the BIOS and doing a fresh reset - sometimes hardware problems just don’t show up in those diagnostic tests.
I really wish I had a better solution for you right now. I know it’s frustrating to be stuck like this, and I truly hope we can find a way to get this figured out without any more hassle. 😔
If there’s anything else I can do to help or if you need anything else, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here for you, and we’ll keep working through it together! 💪
